While public wifi is convenient, it does pose certain security risks. You should always exercise special care and caution when connecting to public wifi.
When using public wifi, you must log into Princeton's GlobalProtect virtual private network (VPN) before sharing University information classified as Restricted or Confidential. Additionally, secure file sharing should be used when sharing information with these classification levels.
When to Use Public Wifi
Public wifi from a trusted source is acceptable for general browsing, though connecting via GlobalProtect virtual private network (VPN) is preferable, as it adds additional layers of security. If you are at one of the federated institutions using eduroam, this is also a safer alternative to wifi.
How to Use It
When using public wifi:
- Protect our info: Do not use public wifi to access protected University information without first logging into GlobalProtect virtual private network (VPN). This re-routes the traffic through Princeton's (protected) network.
- Exercise caution: Open or unfamiliar networks should be verified to avoid fakes designed to intercept information.
- Activate your firewall: Make sure your firewall is active before connecting.
