Store Restricted Information

Even when Restricted information is at rest, measures must be taken to ensure its security and to prevent access by those not authorized to use it. This holds true whether you are on campus or on-the-go.

Storage Options

PLEASE NOTE: Restricted information may NOT be stored on your Google Drive or Dropbox accounts.

Network Drive
  • Includes your personal H: drive and departmental M: drive
  • Housed on the University's Central File Server (CFS)
Microsoft 365
  • Information stored on SharePoint Online, OneDrive, and Microsoft Teams is automatically encrypted. Note that these may be used to store Restricted information, with the exception of protected health information (as defined by HIPAA). 
External Drives
  • External drives must be encrypted before being used to store Restricted information
Laptops / Desktops
  • Laptops or desktops used to store Restricted information must be encrypted

Your Responsibilities

When storing Restricted information on your personal or departmental network drive, you must take measures to limit unauthorized access. External devices or laptops being used to store Restricted information must be encrypted. We encourage you to review the complete Information Security Policy and learn more about your responsibilities.
